Goldwin, Toray, and Idemitsu Kosan Establish a Supply Chain for Nylon Fibers Using Renewable Feedstocks to Reduce the Carbon Footprint.News

Goldwin Inc. (“Goldwin”), Toray Industries, Inc. (“Toray”) and Idemitsu Kosan Co.,Ltd. (“Idemitsu”) have established a supply chain for nylon fiber made from renewable raw materials.

In building this supply chain, the companies utilized existing facilities and applied the mass balance approach. *

By replacing a portion of fossil-derived raw materials with renewable feedstock, three companies aim to contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of the nylon fiber supply chain.

The nylon fiber produced through this project is selected THE NORTH FACE products operated by Goldwin in August 2026.

After that, Goldwin will consider the launch of further products and expand its use to other brands.

The nylon fiber produced using the mass balance approach in this project can be recycled in the same way as conventional Nylon 6.

As the project owner, Goldwin, together with Toray and Idemitsu, which are responsible for each stage of the supply chain, will help reduce the reliance on fossil resources through this collaboration.

In establishing this supply chain, Neste, a Finland-based energy company, supplies bio-naphtha, while Mitsubishi Corporation coordinates and manages the overall supply chain.

*Mass balance approach:

Under the mass balance approach, renewable feedstock is co-processed with fossil-based feedstock in existing production systems. The sustainability attributes associated with the renewable feedstock are then allocated to products in proportion to the amount of renewable feedstock entering the system, enabling the use of renewable materials without requiring dedicated production facilities.

Renewable feedstock:
Raw materials derived from renewable sources, such as sustainably sourced biomass, that are used as alternatives to fossil-based feedstock. In this project, bio-naphtha supplied by Neste serves as the renewable feedstock.
